A League round 6 is creeping up on us and once again Centrebet has come to the party early by getting their odds up first.

Last week I was most impressed by Adelaide who continued their table topping form with a victory over the winless Sydney FC.

They are joined on the top of the Table by the Perth Glory who had a home victory against the Wellington Phoenix.

Central Coast Mariners vs Melbourne Heart

The Central Coast Mariners are coming off a solid 2-0 win against the Melbourne Victory. It caught me by surprise, as the Victory looked to be in pretty good form. The Mariners will be looking to put their home ground advantage to good use again.

The Heart came up with their first win of the clubs history again the North Queensland Fury. The Heart were desperately unlucky the week before and last week’s win was almost inevitable. This week they will be tested on the road against a team that plays well at home.

Even though the Melbourne Heart now have a win on the board and have found some much needed form, I think this away journey will prove too much for them. The Central Coast Mariners are a tough proposition on the road and I think they’ll do enough to get the three points here.

Wellington Phoenix vs Sydney FC

Wellington come home after a couple of really tough road games against the Roar and Glory. They’ll have a massive advantage at home in New Zealand against the Premiers who are still yet to record their first victory of the season.

Wellington will be far too tough in New Zealand. Any team in the A League would struggle here, let alone a Sydney FC team that is yet to record a win.

Adelaide United vs Newcastle Jets

Adelaide United are flying high at the moment and return home to turn on the style in front of their supporters. The Jets have been ravaged by financial concerns and the FFA has had to step in to make sure the players don’t protest. This is more than unsettling, and Newcastle will struggle for motivation against the in-form Adelaide team.

Tips and Prediction

Adelaide are as close to a sure thing as you are going to get. They are in great form and at home to a team that cant be fully focused on playing good football. The $1.70 about Adelaide here is too good to pass up.

Melbourne Victory vs Queensland Roar

This match will be of the highest quality in A league round 6. The Victory are at home where they are excitement plus and perform well regularly.

The Roar are on the road after a less than inspiring performance against the Jets last week. They’ll need to improve this week if they are to match it with the Victory.

This will be a closely fought contest and one that literally could go either way. I can’t see much between these teams and a draw is the most likely result here.

The Glory are on top of the table and look set to stay there after this weekend. They take on the Gold Coast who have been having a wealth of problems in their own backyard, let alone all the way over in Perth.

I can’t see anything but a Perth win here. The Gold Coast may put in a good performance, but the Glory at home should prove too much for them.

NRL Finals Betting 2010 – Week 1

The 2010 NRL finals series gets underway this week in the most open season I’ve seen in a long time. The Dragons are favourites after wrapping up the minor premiership, but there is not much difference in the rest of the teams.

I’m predicting a couple of upsets in the first week of the finals series. The betting markets reflect the closeness of the competition; the third placed Tigers are paying the same odds to win this weekend as their opponents, the sixth placed Roosters.

2010 NRL Premiership Betting

If you’ve been following AustralianGambling.com.au recently you would have seen that the Dragons blew out to $4.10 to win the 2010 premiership. That was after they had a couple of losses under their belt, and the general public were screaming “choke!” again.

Going into the finals series though, the Dragons are clear favourites to win their first title since 1979. One thing to keep in mind is that I’ve noticed a fair bit of difference in the odds available for the 2010 NRL premiership, so shopping around will pay good dividends.

Gold Coast Titans vs New Zealand Warriors

The Titans have done well to get their season back on track after a series of losses earlier in the season had them losing touch with making the finals. Their win against the Dragons got them back on track, and they really haven’t looked back since. Other than a loss to the Sharks they’ve been playing exceptionally well with the team they have available, and notching up wins.

The Warriors are the definite dark horse in the competition. Punters and tipsters still don’t think they can cut it away from home, and have been burnt multiple times this season. I was one of those that struggled a little bit this season with predicting the Warriors’ matches. They come into this match as underdogs, a tag they love to have.

Tips and Predictions

I think the Warriors are going to be too tough in the first finals match of week 1 NRL finals in 2010. The Titans have been in this position a couple of times before, and I don’t think much has changed. They do have more experience, but I think the Warriors are going to get past them with brute force and strength.

The Titans have been winning of late, but I still think they’ve shown plenty of signs of stuttering. I do believe they’ve been losing momentum in the weeks leading up until the finals.

Prediction: Warriors win.

Wests Tigers vs Sydney Roosters

This is the most highly anticipated match of the 2010 NRL week 1 finals. My personal opinion is that it’s a shame the Tigers have to give up their home ground advantage for a bigger crowd attendance. If this match was being played at Leichardt Oval, you can bet your bottom dollar that the Tigers would be heavy favourites.

The Roosters really haven’t looked the same since they lost to the Dragons several weeks ago. They’ve struggled against teams like the Sharks, and made a mess of winning against the Cowboys last week. When they are on song, they’re capable of beating anyone, but it doesn’t look like they produce that kind of form regularly enough.

Tips and Prediction

These two teams are both capable of scoring anywhere on the field. They have met two times in the 2010 NRL regular season and the Roosters have come up trumps on both occasions. This is a completely different occasion now, and the Tigers are in much better form than the Roosters and they give me more confidence that they’ll perform on the day than the Roosters do.

Prediction: Tigers win.

Penrith Panthers vs Canberra Raiders

The Panthers are in a similar position to the Roosters. Earlier in the season they were cruising along accumulating wins, and then their season fell apart in front of their eyes. The question is whether or not the last couple of victories they have had are a sign they are back to form or if it’s just masking their vulnerabilities.

The Raiders have now won seven out of their last eight matches. They do play much better at home (as do most teams), but they are making a Parramatta-like run into the finals. They are the definite danger team in the finals, and go into this elimination final full of steam.

Without big Petero up front for the Panthers, the dominant Raiders pack will be at their rampaging best.

Tips and Prediction

With the Panther’s captain absent, the Raiders forward pack will be all over Penrith. On top of all the go forward they should be able to control this match to get the victory. I expect the Raiders to keep their win streak alive and progress to week two of the 2010 NRL final series.

St George Illawarra Dragons vs Manly Sea Eagles

This is the easiest match to predict in the NRL finals series of 2010. Their is a big difference between the 8th placed Sea Eagles of 2010 and the 8th placed Eels of 2009.

Manly are going to be without several key players, one of those will definitely be the potent weapon of Steve Matai. The Dragons had the luxury resting Hornby, Soward, Young and Smith last week as they prepare themselves for the finals.

Earlier in the season the Sea Eagles won the battle by belting the Dragons up the middle at Brookvale. This is a completely different story with a fit Dragons team in form against a depleted and out of form Manly outfit.

Tips and Prediction

I can’t see any chance of an upset in this match. Manly haven’t been playing well of late and are coming into the finals series on the back of two losses and an under strength lineup.

The Dragons are well rested, aren’t concerned with injuries or suspensions and are in form.

Prediction: Dragons win.

Best Bets of Finals Week 1

There is great value to be had on the Warriors and the Raiders this week. They are going into their respective matches as underdogs, but have better form on their side going into week one of the finals.

The Warriors are paying $2.45 while the Raiders are paying $2.40 at Sportingbet.

A League Round 5 Betting 2010

The start of the 2010 A league season has taken a lot of us by surprise with the early round results. Teams like Adelaide and North Queensland have been playing extremely well in the opening rounds. Perth and Queensland are also going great guns, with Melbourne Victory starting to hit their straps.

This week there are easy matches to predict, and two closer ones. Odds come courtesy of Centrebet Australia who get their odds up earlier than any other Australian bookmaker each week.

Central Coast Mariners vs Melbourne Victory

Since the Mariners won in round 1 they haven’t impressed much at all. The opposite can be said for the Victory though. They are going from strength to strength, and if they can find a good striking partnership until Archie comes back, they’ll be a real threat.

The Heart will be well fired up after their controversial draw last week. They deserved to win that match, and will turn up to play against the Fury. North Queensland came crashing back to Earth last weekend against the in form Reds. They got the early goal but ended up losing 3-2.

Sydney are still looking for their first win, while Adelaide are on top of the competition and surprising the rest of the A-league with their performances. I think this will be a tight match that could go either way.

Both of the teams are playing well at the moment and I expect them both to feature in the 2010 A-league finals. Perth will be a dominant force once they get all their players on the paddock, while teams have consistently struggled to beat the Phoenix.

NRL Round 26 Betting

Last week was the best week for betting on the Rugby League in a number of weeks for both myself and our in-house tipper Deeross. Unfortunately due to technical difficulties we weren’t able to post the tips for the week. I scored 7/8, losing out on the Souths upset over Parramatta. Deeross scored 8/8, with no fingernails left after the Penrith victory last night.

We’re on fire at the moment (especially Deeross), so we’ll try to continue that form for the last week of the NRL regular season, into the finals.

Centrebet get their odds out first, so if you want to get on the punt early this week, they’re the best option. We’ll add the margin betting odds as they become available.

Brisbane Broncos vs Canberra Raiders

The Broncos look gone for all money at the moment. Without Lockyer they look no chance to come close to winning a match.

The Raiders have won something like 6/7 and are setting the competition alight. After a strong victory against the Dragons two weeks ago, they put a shalacking on the Cowboys last weekend.

My prediction is for the Raiders to continue their charge towards the finals series. They look brutal and dangerous at the moment. If their backs can continue to put points on the board then they won’t have any dramas. They arguably have the best pack in the game, so look for Campese and Dugan to pile on the pressure.

Gold Coast Titans vs Wests Tigers

These two teams are fighting it out for a second place finish. The Titans must win by 19 points or more to snatch it away from the Tigers.

After a disappointing loss to the Sharks last week the Titans return home to find some form against a Tigers outfit that finds a way to win no matter how badly they are playing.

This match is hard to predict because they have contrasting styles of play. The Titans are much more consistent and reliable. How much of an influence this has over the Tigers remains to be seen.

The Tigers were struggling for large periods against a depleted Storm team on the weekend. Nevertheless, they still managed to come up with another win.

EDIT: It looks like the Tigers have a significant amont of injuries for this match. So I’m halting my final decision on this match until later in the week.

Parramatta Eels vs New Zealand Warriors

Parramatta came up with yet another disappointing performance last week against the Rabbitohs. I have no faith in this team, who on paper should be much higher on the table (pre-season favourites).

The Warriors have been solid. They continue to turn up for each other and flogged a dismal Broncos team last week. Questions continue to be raised about their ability to win away from home. Will they struggle at Parramatta this week?

This match is hardly worth discussing. The Cowboys have been a disgrace this year and the Roosters need to win this match to take some sort of form into the finals series.

Penrith Panthers vs Cronulla Sharks

The Penny Panthers were less than convincing in the victory over the Bulldogs last night. They hardly deserved to win a match in which they were blown off the park early on, and then lacklustre in attack trying to claw back points.

The Sharks have been playing to a standard that is expected of the team. The sent off Barrett and Covell in style as they muscled their way to victory over a previously red-hot Titans.

I think the Panthers are too short here. Last week’s win takes them to 3/8, and they give me no confidence in tipping them. They do have a lot to play for and are at home, so you’d like to think they’ll get up in this match.

I’d love to tip the Sharks here, but it’s almost impossible when the Panthers are playing for a top four spot. Teams that beat the Sharks tend to do it by a fair margin, so a 13+ victory is reasonable to expect.

Melbourne Storm vs Newcastle Knights

This is the last match we’ll see all the stars of Melbourne playing together. It’s a sellout and everyone is expecting the Storm to put on a great performance.

The Knights almost pulled off a victory against the Dragons last week as they continue to impress every round.

Get on the Knights with a 21.5 point start paying $1.90 right now!!! Best bet of the season.

Manly Sea Eagles vs Canterbury Bulldogs

Manly have played pretty well in the past couple of weeks, especially in the first half against the Roosters.

The Bulldogs will be deflated after giving everything they had last night and still coming out of it as losers. Backing up after a Monday night match is tough as well.

The Dragons have won the minor premiership for the second consecutive year and will be hoping for a change in fortune this finals series. They’ve looked pretty shaky in the past couple of weeks, and could have easily lost to the Knights last week.

South kept their slim hopes of a finals berth alive with an upset win over the Eels. They must now beat the Dragons and hope the Broncos beat the Raiders.

Get on the Knights with the 21.5 start with against the Storm. The best value bet is the Tigers at $2.50 against the Titans. The safest bets are the Dragons at $1.28 and Roosters at $1.32.

There is also good value about the Warriors at $1.90.

A-league Round 3 Betting 2010

It’s time for round 3 of the A-league, a time at which we can begin to get a better idea of how the teams are going to perform. Last week I scored 2/5 after getting the first two matches of round 2 correct.

It must be noted that there have been a large amount of draws so far this season. This might be due to the salaray cap that this article alludes to. Whatever it may be, punters should be taking this into consideration when making a bet.

NRL Round 24 Betting 2010

Last week in NRL round 23 betting we were a little below par again. My upset didn’t come off so I scored 4/8, while our top NRL commentator “deeross” scored 5/8.

This week it doesn’t get any easier, but in comparison to previous weeks my tips and predictions are straight forward.

Newcastle Knights vs Brisbane Broncos

The Knights have been good in recent weeks, especially at home. They took apart Manly and Canterbury at home before losing in New Zealand last week. They return home to play a Broncos team that is coming off the back of a home loss to the Parramatta Eels.

Predictions and Tips

Both of these teams are coming off a loss and will be looking to improve. The Knights are all but gone from the top 8 race, but the Broncos are still in it. This alone won’t be enough, because they are without Lockyer and are away from home.

This is a danger match for the Broncos, but if they are going to have any chance in the NRL 2010 season, it’s close to a must win game.

Prediction: Broncos win.

Penrith Panthers vs South Sydney Rabbitohs

The Panthers churned out yet another disappointing performance last week as they continue to fade into oblivion. The Rabbitohs are playing as best they can with a limited amount of troops going around. If Souths were at full strength, they’d be close to favourites here. The fact that Souths are depleted and the match is being played at Penrith gives them favouritism. Is that justified though?

Without any real confidence most punters will be siding with the Panthers here. Souths went down fighting last week against the Storm after an extra time victory against the Tigers the week before.

Penrith started well against the Tigers last week, but faded late. They “should” have too much for Souths this week. I was let down by them last week, but I do expect them to be up for this one.

Manly Sea Eagles vs New Zealand Warriors

Despite losing 32-10 against the Dragons on Monday night, Manly played pretty well. If a couple of decisions had gone their way, it could have been a much tighter contest.

The Warriors keep ticking over victories and find themselves well within finals contention. Their away form is what still has question marks, and this week will provide good insight into how they’re going to perform in the finals away from home.

Melbourne Storm vs Cronulla Sharks

The Storm are still managing to grind out victories, without anything to play for. Cameron Smith has already confirmed this week that the Storm players are struggling to find motivation each week.

The Sharks played a high quality match against the Roosters last week and pulled out the upset of the round. They are heavy underdogs in this match, but their form in recent weeks suggests it could be closer than the online bookmakers are predicting.

I’ve been giving the Cowboys a fair bit of praise in recent weeks, despite their losing form. They continue to get themselves into winning positions and doing nothing about it.

This week they take on another poor team in the Bulldogs. Does the fact that the Bulldogs are almost as bad as them mean they’ll finally come up with a win at home?

The Bulldogs are way too short in this match. Perhaps I’ve been giving the Cowboys too much credit in recent weeks, but I can’t see too much difference between these two teams. Canberra Raiders vs St George Illawarra Dragons

The Dragons have not won at Canberra Stadium since 1999. The Dragons hate playing the Raiders, who are their bogey team. The Raiders have already beaten the Dragons this season, albeit during State Of Origin.

Up until the return of Weyman a couple of weeks ago, the Dragons forward pack looked soft and impotent. This week will be a stern test for them as they take on the brute force of the Canberra forwards.

The Dragons are gaining momentum after coming out of their mid-season slump. They’ve beaten what I believe to be their two biggest challengers in the Roosters and Sea Eagles in the past two weeks. Now they take on their bogey team in another big match for them.

I don’t think the Dragons will lose another game this year, and this week they’ll continue on their way to the 2010 NRL Premiership.

Prediction: Dragons win.

Parramatta Eels vs Wests Tigers

This match is tricky to predict. The Eels upset the Broncos last week, but can’t seem to perform on a consistent basis. They are at home against a team that they have a great record against, and the bookmakers believe they’re good things.

The Tigers are up against their bogey team, but keep finding ways to win. Every match they play they look like they’re going to lose, which makes bookmakers and punters uncertain about their prospects. The Tigers could win or lose this match by 20, what will it be?

The Eels beat a Broncos team last week without Lockyer. Does that make them deserved favourites at home to a team equal 2nd on the ladder? The Eels have shown all year they can’t be trusted to perform each week.

That being said, the Tigers haven’t been playing well in the past weeks. They are away to their bogey team which is enough for me to tip the Eels.

Sydney Roosters vs Gold Coast Titans

The Roosters well belted (literally) against the Dragons two weeks ago and I think that carried over last week against the Sharks. It was a very physical match against the Dragons, which could have deflated them some.

The Titans are flying high at the moment sitting in second place. They seem to be doing everything right, just a few weeks after everyone had written them off to be contending during the finals.

This will be an entertaining match to watch. Both of these teams believe they are in with a good chance to win this season and have top four prospects. If the Roosters lose, that’ll be three consecutive defeats. If the Titans lose, it’ll show once again they’re incapable of winning important matches against the big teams.

I think the Roosters are a far superior side to the Titans. They are playing at home and should get the job done this week.

Prediction: Roosters win.

NRL Round 24 Best Bets

My best bet of the round is Manly to beat the Warriors @ $1.48. If you take the -7.5 you can get on @ $2.00.

The best value bets of the round come in the form of upsets. The two matches that I think are vulnerable to upsets are the Cowboys @ $2.30 and the Tigers @ $2.15.

PGA Championship 2010

The PGA Championship get underway in less than two hours. There isn’t much chance to get your bets on, in what is widely believed to be a very open contest in 2010. For some reason Sportingbet still has Tiger Woods as the equal 2nd favourite at $17.00. People must hate money if they are getting on that.

Phil Mickelson is the favourite at $14.00, despite not being in the best form either. Out of the favourites I like Rory Mcllroy the most. He’s been looking more likely to win a major every time he plays, and this could well be his time.

A-league Round 2 Betting

With four draws last week in five matches, it made the round tough to pick. If you managed to get all the results in a multi, you’d be getting ~$1500 to the dollar for your efforts.

What a terrible week of NRL betting round 22 was. After predicting a whole host of underdogs and “clever” tips, just 2/8 came through. Our in-house Rugby League commentator “deeross” didn’t go much better either, sitting with me on 2/8. Not to worry though, this week is shaping up much better and we’ll try and pick you some more winners.

I’d like to make special mention of the fact that Centrebet Australia get their odds out well before Sportingbet and Sportsbet. If you like to jump on early then Centrebet is definitely the place to start. The same can be said for A-league betting.

Make sure you take the time to shop around for the best lines and odds at the best Australian bookmakers. Please note that not all of the betting markets are currently available so I’ll update the article as that information becomes available.

Cronulla Sharks vs Sydney Roosters

The Roosters will dominate this match. They picked up a couple of injuries in their loss to the Dragons, but they’ll demolish the Sharks here.

The Broncos are still yet to convince me and without Lockyer there could be trouble. That being said, the Eels were woeful in the second half against the Titans last week. This game will be a good test to see how the young Broncos backs stand up without their experienced play maker at the helm.

Gold Coast Titans vs North Queensland Cowboys

The Titans blew the Eels off the park in the second half last week putting 34 points on them. The Cowboys always look dangerous but can’t seem to come up with the goods. They’ll be without Thurston, so who knows they might put something together this week.

I’m tipping a Titans victory here, but don’t think it will be a white wash. I actually like the +13.5 the Cowboys are getting. It’s an all Queensland affair and the Titans haven’t had the best home record this season.

That being said though, if they are to do anything this season this is a must win game.

Update 11/8: The line is now 14 points and the Titans have shortened into just $1.19. The Cowboys will be without Thurston.

Canterbury Bulldogs vs Canberra Raiders

What a disgrace the Bulldogs were last week against the Knights. They’ve shown they are capable of doing that all season long. Last time I didn’t give them a chance though, they beat Souths. It could be much of the same this week against an erratic Raiders team who I desperately need to understand more. They were clearly outplayed in the first half against the Panthers and were gone for all money, then they come out in the second half and set the world alight.

This is an absolute coin flip as to who will turn up. Someone obviously knew Canberra were onto something last week as one happy punter put 15k on the Raiders to get up. Canberra are still a mathematical chance of making the eight, but realistically they won’t make it.

Update 11/8: This is the match that I’ve been having the most trouble with lately. I’ve been pouring through the stats and the ones that jump out at me most are there most recent results:
Canterbury are 1/4
Canberra are 4/5

On that note I’m going to have to take the Raiders.

Prediction: Raiders win.

New Zealand Warriors vs Newcastle Knights

This match could provide the best value of the round, if you think the Knights are a chance. I still think the Warriors are overrated, and their victory against the Sharks is masking their true abilities.

The Knights are close to the form team of the competition at the moment, and are looking good with the fact that the Warriors lost their last home game to the Titans.

I’m predicting this match will go a similar way to the Warriors vs Titans a couple of weeks ago. The question is whether the Warriors will throw the match away like they did that day.

I’d love to back the Knights here, but the 5.5 points just isn’t enough. I’m going to analyse this one more in depth because I don’t think the $1.50 about the Warriors has anything to do other than the home ground advantage.

Update 11/8: The line is now 6.5 points. The Warriors have won 5/6 of recent matches between these two teams. At Mt Smart Stadium they actually have a losing record against the Knights which is an interesting statistic. Newcastle have now won 5/7 of their last matches, which includes an extra time loss.

Prediction: I’m sticking to my guns here and predicting a massive upset. Knights win.

Melbourne Storm vs South Sydney Rabbitohs

The Storm were well and truly beaten last week against Manly but return home to take on a Souths team buoyed by a last play victory against the Tigers. Last time these two teams played Souths came up with the good in Perth.

Souths will have three players back this week, with Sam Burgess the biggest addition after serving his suspension.

Update 11/8: Not much has changed except Inglis has now signed with the Broncos. Now that is cleared up he might be in for a blinder.

Wests Tigers vs Penrith Panthers

The Panthers are specials here. They welcome back their halfback Luke Walsh and fullback Lachlan Coote. These two players will provide the impetus needed to come out on top here.

The Tigers will go backwards, and fast after last week. They have been on the verge of collapsing all season long and this week we’ll begin to see that. We sent some AustralianGambling.com.au employees to the game last week and they all came back saying the Tigers are gone for the season. The fans were not impressed at all.

The Dragons are coming off the back off a big victory against the Roosters last week. I believe their other main rival is the Sea Eagles, a team who beat them earlier in the season. The Dragons will be looking to build from last week, and get the confidence they need going into the 2010 NRL finals by beating one of their main rivals.

Manly were impressive against the Storm last week, but on the whole have struggled for consistency. They’ll need to improve significantly from their last away performance when they were flogged by the Knights.
