English Premier League Betting – Round 1, 2010/2011
By Bernie Pollock - August 10, 2010
The English Premier League 2010/2011 season kicks off in what should turn out to be a competitive fight between the top teams. Obviously Chelsea and Manchester United are the favourites, but the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool shouldn’t be too far behind.
Pre-season Future Betting Markets
EPL Champion Betting
The English Premier League champion future betting doesn’t offer any real value in my books. The winner is going to be either Chelsea @ $2.50 or Man Utd at $3.50. If you think for some reason they won’t be up for it this season, Man City is @ $5.50 with Arsenal @ $7.50. These odds are current at the time of writing at Sportingbet.
2010/2011 Premier League Relegation
Blackpool are favourites, and quite rightly so. They are paying $1.28, far too tight for me to be getting on here. WBA is the next in line @ $1.90, again too tight for me.
I think there is far better value going for a team like Bolton @ $5.00. I won’t be betting here though, these future markets seem quite nitty.
2010/11 English Premier League Top Goalscorer
My two picks for the top goal scorer are Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez. Both of these teams score plenty of goals. The reason I’m not getting on Drogba at $6.00 is because too many goals will come from Anelka and Lampard.
Rooney is paying $6.50 and Tevez $11.00. Torres is $8.00 and Van Persie is @ $11.00 if either of those take your fancy.
2010/11 English Premier League Handicap
Everton is the favourite here @ $12.00 with a +22 point start. My two best picks from this futures market is Newcastle united @$15.00 with +41 and Sunderland @$15.00 with +38.
This market is especially intriguing if you follow the EPL closely. I think someone like Newcastle will perform above expectations, so the +41 on offer could well tip them into the lead.
That being said, if you fail to see another roughie punch above their weight you’ll lose. Which is where the double digit odds come into play.
EPL Round 1 Betting
The early rounds of betting is always tough in the EPL. I’m not even going to pretend to predict all the results effectively. There is however value in teams that jump out of the blocks that aren’t expected to do well. There have been a number of cases like Hull and Stoke in recent seasons that have managed to pile on the wins early, at good value.
As the season progresses past the first few rounds, we’ll be able to make better football betting predictions for our Australian gamblers.
