Adelaide casino $300m reno still on track after re-think

Skycity will continue with its $330 million renovation of its Adelaide casino after it was forced to revisit its long-held plans.

While it has been 18 months since the original plans for the precinct were approved, Skycity was seeking to boost its appeal to VIP punters as well as looking at increasing the number of rooms it could offer.

It has now confirmed it will increase the number of hotel rooms from 89 to 123 by adding an additional floor to the plans for the expanded building.

There have also been new restaurants and bars and function spaces for up to 750 people h added to the expansion which will begin early in 2018.

“We’ve taken a fresh look at both our existing building and the design for the expansion,” Adelaide Casino general manager Luke Walker said.

“We’ve redesigned interiors, revitalised social, entertainment and gaming spaces, and relocated restaurants and bars.”

“We believe there is demand for more quality hotel rooms in Adelaide from both domestic and international visitors. This provides a better-balanced product while also helping South Australia realise its full potential as a premium tourist destination,’’ he said.

The upgrade is due to be completed in 2020, with up to 1,000 jobs created during the construction phase and another 800 jobs at the Casino ongoing.

Skycity will also get greater concessions to admit more people to their VIP room.

“The discussion with the State Government revolved around the ability to attract interstate and international customers,” Walker said.

“There’s been a slight relaxation to our premium rooms to facilitate that.”

The casino has been struggling to attract international visiitors and last year reported a reduction of close to a million in earning from international VIPs over a six-month period.

The battle from international VIPs, particularly from China, is set to intensify with Crown building a new casino in Sydney and The Star constructing a new casino in Brisbane.

There are also plans for a second casino on the Gold Coast.
