Best NRL Bookmakers
For active NRL punters, we recommend having accounts at multiple online bookmakers. This gives you the ability to compare odds, get the best prices, and take advantage of a wide variety of NRL promos offered throughout the year. If you aren’t comparing odds, you’re costing yourself money. Below are brief descriptions of our favourite NRL bookmakers for Australian punters.
1/ IASbet.com – Our highest rated bookmaker for NRL, IASbet normally runs 114 to 200 markets per match. Bets can be placed online, or on a mobile device. They have iPhone, iPad, and Android betting apps, plus a mobile version of the site for other devices. To get the appropriate app for your device, use our links to IASbet and their website will automatically redirect you to it.
Right now, IASbet is offering new punters a $100 free bet upon a $50 initial deposit. Beyond that, they’re also offering a variety of other bonuses & promos. Their promos range from mobile promotions to specific sports promos, and they’re constantly changing throughout the year. To view all of the latest bonuses & promos, visit the IASbet.com promotions page.
IASbet offers a huge variety of markets for all international sports, but they excel in covering Aussie sports like NRL, AFL, A-league, horse racing and greyhound racing. Since they’re licensed in Australia, yet owned by Paddy Power (England), they have one of the most thorough books online. So, if you also like to bet on cricket, Formula 1, tennis, international football, or anything else for that matter, this is a great place to bet.
For Australian deposits & withdrawal options, IASbet offers Paypal, Visa credit & debit cards, Mastercard, POLi, Skrill, bank cheque and more. Deposits, withdrawals, and bets can all be made in AUD currency.
2/ Centrebet.com – Centrebet typically offers 90-230 markets for every NRL match of the season. Vig (juice) is standard for the industry, usually 5% – 10%, but it depends on the type of bet you’re making. Live betting and live streaming video is also available. Mobile betting is offered via Apple iOS and Android apps, or a mobile version of their website for all other devices.
For 2013, Centrebet is offering new players a $200 free bet upon their first deposit. To get the free bet, go to www.Centrebet.com, make a deposit using AUD funds, and enter promo code NEW200 when requested during the deposit process. They also run NRL promotions all season long, including free bets for specific matches, and free contests as well (which pay real money prizes).
Centrebet accepts deposits in AUD currency, and bets can be made in AUD as well. The most popular deposit options are Visa credit & debit cards, Mastercard, Skrill, Paypal, POLi – all of which are instant deposits. Bank transfer and BPAY are also available, but they can take as long as 5 days for funds to be available.
3/ Sportingbet.com.au – Another great option for NRL punters, Sportingbet has a huge selection of markets available for every round. Live betting and mobile betting are also offered, along with live streaming video. They accept bets up to $25,000 (depending on the type of bet you’re making), making them a solid choice for high-stakes punters. For even higher limits, punters can contact their 24/7 customer support team and make the request. We’ve heard of players making bets of $50,000 at Sportingbet.
Sportingbet is currently offering a $200 free bet to new customers. No bonus code is needed, as the code is embedded in our links to the Sportingbet.com.au website.
4/ Sportsbet.com.au – Another online bookie focused on Aussie sports, Sportsbet is a site we should all have accounts at. They offer the same, standard NRL betting markets that Centrebet and Sportingbet offer, plus some unique ones as well (especially unique exotics). Mobile and NRL live betting are also available.
New punters can get a $100 free bet on their first deposit, and no bonus code is needed. Although Sportsbet offers a lot of promotions throughout the year, there tends to be fewer for NRL (fewer than Centrebet and Sportingbet). With that said, punters should check the Sportsbet promotions page weekly to stay up to date.

NRL Fantasy Football 2013
Fantasy Football is taking Australia by storm of late. We personally recommend the real money fantasy football at Sportingbet. You can win prizes, and throw on some bets within the same account.
If you don’t want to go to a bookmaker then Fox Sports fantasy NRL is another great option.
How to Bet on NRL
There are tons of different NRL bet types, most are very straight forward and don’t need much explaining. If you are betting on the NRL Grand Final, futures, Clive Churchill Medal, Daily M, State Of Origin (SOO), or betting on a particular match, you’ll more than likely know what you are doing. Below is an explanation of all of the most popular types of NRL bets.
Head To Head
Head to head or H2H betting is the most basic and popular way of betting on the NRL. Head to head betting is backing the team you think will win and simply betting that they will win. This bet type usually includes extra time or golden point as well. A typical head to head market would be expressed like this;
Team A – $2.00
Team B – $1.80
Bookmakers will set prices based on their perceived chances of either team winning. For punters new to investing on rugby league this is a good bet type to start out on. It is also a great medium for those who like to take out all factors other than just their team winning.
There are many factors to consider before having a head to head bet. Winning form, historical trends, form against the current opposition, results at the ground, weather and basically anything that you believe will play a part in the result needs to be factored in.
Margin betting on the NRL is a very popular way of investing and also a great bet type to couple up in multi’s. margin betting is basically selecting the team that you think will win and the margin they will win by. The standard margin betting market will look something like this;
Team A – 1-12 – $2.88
Team A – 13+ – $4.33
Team B – 1-12 – $2.40
Team B – 13+ – $8.50
These brackets provide the most popular margin betting but this betting method is far from isolated to just these parameters. Many bookmakers will also provide alternative margin brackets. For example they may provide various five or ten point brackets (0-10, 11-20 etc).
Bookies will also offer prices on the exact margin, these are a little more difficult to get right but offer big returns, usually upwards of twenty dollars.
Line or Handicap Betting
In this betting type, bookmakers will handicap a team to make the event a more even contest, much like the way a handicapper will allocate different weights to even up a horse race.
The idea of this market is that you can then back either team at often the same price with either the benefit of extra points or a handicap. It is also referred to as spread betting and when a handicapped team manages to win, it is often referred to as covering the line or covering the spread. A line betting market will typically look like this;
Team A (-4.5 points) – $1.92
Team B (+4.5 points) – $1.92
Markets may change slightly after they open, particularly if a team is heavily supported my punters but they will usually open at an identical price for each team. Bookmakers often also frame an additional market with a larger handicap or advantage and offer a higher price.
Other Match Markets
Different bookmakers will also provide various other markets. Some of these include;
- Over/Under score – Predict if the total match points will be over or under the score designated by the bookmaker. For example the bookie will set a score of 38.5 points. They will offer a similar price for both over or under options to bet on.
- Tri-Bet – This is a very interesting bet type that offers three different options. This is virtually a handicap market where both teams are handicapped by 6.5 points. A Tri-Bet market will look like this;
Team A (-6.5 points) – $1.84
Either Team to win by 6 or less – $3.05
Team B (-6.5 points) $5.10
The market itself is pretty self explanatory. You will either bet that a side will win by seven or more points or that either side will win by six or less.
Race To Points Market – In this market you are selecting which team will reach a designated score first. For example you would back Team A to reach ten points before Team B.
First scoring play – Select the first method by which points will be scored in the game. This market has quite a few options such as Team A try, Team A penalty goal, Team B try etc.
Bookmakers will offer a variety of doubles on each match. A double is basically a bet that includes two legs or variables which you need to select successfully.
One of the most popular NRL doubles is the “half time/full time” double. This requires a punter to select the team who will be leading at half time and full time respectively. With a draw also being an option there is plenty of combinations. An example bet on this bet type could be you think a team is a fast beginner who tires then you would select them as the half time option and their opposition as the full time option.
There is also half time/full time margin doubles available. These are set with varying brackets where you will select a half time leader and by how much and then do the same at full time. An example of this bet would be if you fancy Team A, you might have a Team A 1-12/Team A 13+ double. This would mean that they need to lead by 1-12 at half time and more than thirteen at full time. These type of doubles will offer quite attractive returns.
There are also more exotic double options like a first try scorer/winning margin double. These can offer massive returns, usually upwards of $20 at the very least.
Futures betting refers to bets that are made, that won’t get a result until the event finishes or betting markets close. An example of futures betting is the NRL premiership betting, top 4 betting, top 8 betting, make the grand final and wooden spoon.
There is a myriad of long term or “futures” bets that you can have on the NRL as the season progresses. These include backing any team to;
- Win the NRL Grand Final.
- Pick the Grand Finalists.
- Win the NRL Minor premiership (most competition points at the end of the regular season).
- Make the top 4.
- Make the Top 8.
- Win the least games all season (formerly known as the wooden spoon market).
There are also futures markets on players as well. These include;
- Dally M Player of the year.
- Leading try scorer.
- Leading point scorer.
Clive Churchill Betting
Bet on man of the match in NRL Grand Final.
NRL Wooden Spoon Betting
The wooden spoon is a colloquial term for coming last in the regular football season.
Multi betting is a very popular method of betting on the NRL. this is basically linking various different bets together to achieve a bigger dividend. Each dividend multiplies by the next. For example if you took two H2H bets with the first at $2.50 and the second at $2.00. If successful you would get a return of $5.00 ($2.50 x $2.00). Punters can link bets from different markets such as a head to head in Game A into a margin bet in Game B. the options are endless.
Exotics and Other Bets
- First and Last Try scorer
- First Scoring Play
- Man of the Match
- Exact Score
- Exact Winning Margin
- First Team to Score
- Half Time Result
- Number of Tries
- Total Match Points (I like this. Weather and stats obviously play a big part).
There are several betting markets for individual players in any game. These include;
First try scorer – Select the first try scorer of the match. These often pay upwards of $10. When looking for a first try scorers it is worth paying strong consideration to wingers and fullbacks as well as the top try scorers list.
Last try scorer – Select the last try scorer of the match. These markets are often similar to the first try scorer markets. When looking for last try scorers it is worth considering strong eighty minute players as well as the usual top try scorers for teams.
A player to score a try in the match – Select a player to score a try at any time during the game. These markets are normally much shorter prices than the first and last try scorer markets. When selecting players for this type of bet consider consistent try scorers and use top try scorers lists for a guide.
Man of The match – Select the player of the match (usually as selected by a nominated tv network). This market often offers plenty of value, particularly if you fancy a player who isn’t a big name or super star. In the Grand Final this bet is based on the Clive Churchill medal.
National Rugby League (NRL) is one of the top two sports to bet on in Australia (AFL betting is the other one). Depending on where you grew up will probably determine how interested you are in NRL.
With so many options to bet on, most punters can find something in the NRL that caters for their style of betting. Punters should aim to bet on a market that best suits them and their budget. With careful analysis it can be a profitable sport to bet on.
We recommend having accounts at several different NRL bookmakers, but for a full suite of betting options www.Centrebet.com is the best option to bet on the NRL.
