There are only a few simple things you need to consider before playing real money baccarat online. Is your online casino secure? Is it eCOGRA (e-Commerce and Online Gaming Regulation and Assurance) approved? Does it have banking options for Australians? Well our recommended casinos, which are all powered by the award-winning Microgaming software, are all tried and tested for Australian players. Below we highlight the pros and cons of each.
1 – Royal Vegas Casino – RV is a member of the Fortune Lounge Group and is our no.1 rated casino for online baccarat. RV has three different versions of baccarat including a high-limit game in which you can bet up to $1000 per hand, available in both the downloadable client, and the Flash Web browser casinos. Unfortunately RV’s app and mobile website have not had baccarat developed for them. RV also welcomes new players with up to $1,200 in free match bets, which is one of the most generous offers on the internet.
2 – Casino-Mate – Also powered by Microgaming, Casino-Mate has several different versions of baccarat in its downloadable suite and instant-play casino, including high-limit baccarat and Baccarat Gold. Casino-Mate gives its new players unlimited recurring match bonuses upon all deposits made.

Live dealer baccarat is available for all Australian real money players – see the cards being dealt by a very attractive female. Read more about live baccarat here.
Because of the simplicity of baccarat, much of the excitement is generated from the huge amounts being spent on the tables and the crowd of people that is often watching the game. While it is hard to bring that atmosphere to a game operated by a Random Number Generator, live dealer baccarat has managed to bring some of the atmosphere you would find in a bricks and mortar casino to their virtual counterparts.
The obvious positive to playing baccarat with a live dealer is that you can see the dealer distributing the cards so it gives you peace of mind that you are being treated fairly. You can also interact with the dealer. Most live dealer games give you the option of changing the video quality and the size of the window that you’re playing in.
Generally you will also be able to customise your layout, meaning you can have all of the information like recent hand history right there in front of you.
Before the cards are dealt the player places a bet on Player, Banker or on the hands being a Tie.
After all players have made their bets, the dealer will give two cards each to the banker and player hands. Hands are scored by adding up the value of each card in the hand. Tens and face cards are scored as 0, aces are worth 1, and other cards are worth their rank (for instance, a six is worth 6). The value of a hand cannot exceed 9; only the last digit in a score counts. This means that a hand of 14 is worth 4 points. The highest possible hand is a 9, while the lowest is a 0.
Depending on the scores of the two hands, one or both hands may end up taking a third card. The following rules are used to determine whether this occurs:
The banker uses the following rules in this situation:
After any third cards have been dealt, the scores of the two hands are compared. The higher hand wins; if the two hands have the same score, the tie bet wins, while both banker and player bets push. Winning player bets are paid even money. Winning banker bets win even money minus a 5% commission; in other words, a $20 bet would win $19. In most casinos, tie bets win 8-1, though 9-1 odds are sometimes offered instead.
If you watch other gamblers play baccarat, it’s easy to come away with the impression that baccarat is a game of high strategy. Most players in live baccarat will be tracking the scores of each hand, looking for patterns in the numbers and placing their bets appropriately. However, the truth is that this is entirely unnecessary! The best thing you can do to cut the house edge in baccarat is to bet on the banker every time. Betting on the player hand is only slightly worse, while the tie bet is certainly not profitable in the long run, and should only be played as a ‘feeling lucky’ side bet.
Does tracking numbers work in baccarat? Well, let’s consider an even more powerful method than just keeping track of scores: card counting. In theory, you could keep track of every card that came out of a baccarat shoe, and use this information to decide which hands to play later on. In fact, some cards are beneficial to either the player or banker – removing a four from the deck helps the banker, while removing a six helps the player, for instance – hand, so it’s not entirely ridiculous to attempt this.
Unfortunately, from a practical perspective, it simply doesn’t work. This can be shown by imagining a perfectly precise count, which would involve counting the exact amount the house edge changed by every time a card came out. Now, imagine you were allowed to use this perfect count in a game that had an incredibly unlikely deck penetration of 98 per cent, meaning that the shoe would be used up until the point where only a few cards were left.
Even under these conditions, your chances for profitability would be extremely limited. You would only run into an opportunity to make a profitable bet about once every 475 hands or so, and chances are, the casino isn’t going to let you stand around and watch for hundreds of hands before making a bet. Even if they did, you won’t exactly make a fortune doing this; if you bet $1,000 on every profitable hand, you could expect to make under $10 for every 100 hands you played. In other words, we don’t recommend trying to be a baccarat card counter, unless you enjoy feeling frustrate.
Baccarat offers players some of the best odds in the casino, making it a great choice for any gambler who wants a real chance of making a profit. The house edge on banker bets is just 1.06 per cent, while the house edge on the player bet is not much worse at 1.24 per cent. The bet to avoid is the tie bet which has a house edge of about 5 per cent and odds of only 8-1.
If you’re interested, the odds of the banker hand winning an individual hand are approximately 45.9%, while the player hand will win 44.6% of the time. Ties occur about 9.5% of the time. As ties count as pushes when playing the banker or player bets, the banker bet would actually be profitable for the player if it weren’t for the five per cent commission; with zero commission, the player would have about a 1.24 per cent edge on the banker bet.
The game is first documented in history as early as the 1400s and has made its way into pop culture through the likes of French nobility, James Bond movies (watch above) and most recently through a baccarat boom in Asia.
There have been three versions of the game that have remained popular. These are baccarat chiming de far, baccarat banquet and punto banco. These three version are similar with slight variances in the dealing of the cards. Largely online casinos have what are called ‘mini baccarat tables’ because they have lower limits than the traditional high roller tables at land-based casinos. .
